This was the first ‘official’ meeting for the Sydney region of BUGS.

Here are most of our members (minus 3) that attended the first official BUGS meeting in Sydney. We had a fulfilling lunch at the Kwangtung Palace in Hornsby followed by an informal chat about the who, what, why and where of the organisation.

[BSD Users Group, Sydney.]

BUGS is a group of users of BSD based operating systems who live in NSW, communicate via a mailing list, and meet occasionally in Sydney and surrounds. Our first group meeting was on 16 May, 1999.

Activities include support, advocacy, and sharing of resources and information, but a major objective is to enjoy each other’s company and have a good time without actually wasting time.

In April 1999, Jonathan Michaels, Carl Stern and Peter and Michaela Fackrell met to plan forming a FreeBSD user group in Sydney, and Sue Blake attended by telephone.

We set up a mailing list and started advertising on the relevant FreeBSD mailing lists. As soon as discussion started within the group we realised that we wanted to include all BSD operating systems. When strict rules were imposed many people withdrew from the group, returning to a new structure without rules and leaders but based …

What is IRC?

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It’s a text-based chat service which predates all those ad-infested, bloated, virus-ridden commercial offerings like Yahoo! Messenger, MSN, etc.

Just as there is no single web server, there is no single IRC server; you can connect to various public servers on the internet. Examples of well-known ones are freenode and efnet. On a particular server, conversation is divided into separate groups called channels. All messages in a channel are visi…
